This site is an experiment to see if I could really set up a new website in under an hour, from buying the domain name, setting up hosting, and installing WordPress. OK, I didn’t make it under my time-limit. I took screenshots all along the way, which slowed me down. And I had to put a new perch in the chicken house, feed the dogs, etc. But still – even with all the distractions, I still ended up with a brand new site pretty darned fast.
When I got up this morning I actually intended to put a tutorial about building a website on another blog, so all the paper mache artists who visit the blog would have some easy instructions to follow. Unfortunately, explaining it and reading the explanation actually takes longer than doing it – and, since I tend to blather on about every little detail, the post was getting too long.
Since I had to buy a new domain name anyway, in order to get the screen shots, I went ahead and built this new site, and directed my blog readers to come here for the instructions. I hope the information on these pages will help many more artists and craftspeople build their own inexpensive, custom-made site.
The tutorials on this site aren’t intended to be taken as “the way you should do it.” It just happens to be the way I do it when I want to build a new website pretty quickly. I include the plugins that I use on all my sites to help the search engines find me. And you’ll find links to the programs and services that I use – some of the links are affiliate links, meaning that I’ll get a small commission if you click on the link and buy the program or service. If you prefer to leave me out of the loop, just type the URLs into your browser bar.
There are lots of other programs and plugins and services that may be useful. However, I’ve narrowed it down to just a few extras that I use all the time. If you want to get fancy and add more functionality to your site, just do a Google search for the function you want. You’ll find lots of helpful advice, for free.
So what are you waiting for? Go build yourself a website!
